Do fitness trackers really motivate?

If you've worn a fitness tracker, have you been frustrated when you don't get "credit" for some of your daily activity? I am honestly surprised by how important it is to me to see the various counts, scores, etc. that my watch has tracked by the end of the day or week. In fact my husband and I compare daily steps. So if forget to charge the battery, or the watch doesn't recognize my movement correctly or whatever, even though I know I did the work it feels like I got an unfair grade on a school test, or that I was unfairly disqualified when I actually won a race. It's kind-of hilarious, but the point is that these things actually do motivate us to move. I guess it taps into some natural competitive spirit or something. I've tried several brands and most of them do a reasonable job with consistency (if you keep the battery charged) even if they don't always compare correctly with another watch.
