What is Functional Training?
Think about the word function in Functional Training. It's about the ability to perform well and pain-free while doing the things you do. It is training with a purpose, whether that is recovering, preventing or just doing.
Many people exercise with the goal of looking better. Functional Training is designed to help you perform better and avoid injury. Its focus is on movement and stability, not muscle isolation as with traditional body building. In real world activities muscles don't work in isolation.
A sample story

"Tony", a young IT professional was active and in average health when he started working with me. His passions included wake boarding, golf and keeping up with his young son. But Tony was beginning to feel the effects of his many hours sitting behind a desk, having less energy for the activities he loved. He also suffered from chronic back pain.

I learned quickly that Tony had good strength in certain muscles but needed to balance that strength in opposing muscles to improve stability. He was also very tight, especially in the hips and shoulders. I designed a program for balanced strength movements combined with a big focus on flexibility and core stability. We had fun tackling the many crazy combos & challenges as we watched his progress.

It was rewarding for me to see Tony's surprise as he discovered the many unexpected things in his life that became easier and more enjoyable. Everyone loves to see their golf game improve and their back pain ease off. But he also feels younger and happier while wrestling on the floor with his son, installing garage lighting or unloading his wife's new trees from the pickup.
