How Does Deep Stretching Make a Difference?

Flexibility isn't just for gymnasts. It's difficult to believe the impact that tight, short muscles can have on your everyday life until you experience the difference for yourself. You likely already know about most of the benefits listed below but if you haven't made it a meaningful part of your workout and relaxed through a true deep stretch, you may not be a believer ... yet.

Deep Stretch

FLEXIBILITY

The most established and obvious benefit of stretching is improved flexibility and range of motion. By improving your range of motion, your body requires less energy to make the same movements which in turn improves athletic performance and reduces the likelihood of injuries.

STAMINA

Stretching loosens your muscles and tendons which relieves muscle fatigue and increases blood flow. The longer you exercise the more energy you burn, typically causing fatigue. Stretching can delay the onset of muscle fatigue by ensuring oxygen is efficiently flowing through your blood, thereby increasing your endurance and reducing recovery time.

INJURY

Stretching helps to supply a greater nutrient supply to muscles, increases range of motion and encourages strength thereby reducing chances of falls or injuries.

ENERGY

Stiff, sore and underused tight muscles can make you feel lethargic. Keeping your muscles loose by stretching will help revitalize your energy levels.

POSTURE

Stretching the muscles in your lower back, chest and shoulders can keep your spine in better alignment and improve overall posture, relieving aches and pains. With reduced pain, there is a reduced desire to hunch or slouch.

BLOOD CIRCULATION

Stretching increases blood flow to the muscles. Greater blood circulation helps promote cell growth and organ function. Because your heart doesn't have to work as hard, your heart rate will be lower and your blood pressure can become more even and consistent.

ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

If your muscles are contracted and inflexible, they will be less effective during your favorite activities because your body has to work harder to make the same movements. Regular stretching will relax your muscles and enable them to be more efficient and available during exercise.

STRESS

Stretching before and after a workout gives your muscles time to relax, and therefore time for you to relax.  Don’t skimp on your stretching!
